WebThis is a wonderful, .67" long, green olivine peridot crystal that was collected from Kaghan Valley in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan. It features stunning green coloration and needle-like ludwigite inclusions scattered throughout the crystal. This specimen has been mounted to an acrylic display base with mineral tack. All minerals that are orthorhombic, like peridot, are biaxial and are defined by three principal axes: α, β, γ. Refractive index readings of faceted gems contain indices α = 1.653, β = 1.670, and γ = 1.689 with a corresponding biaxial birefringence of 0.036. The refractive index, as well as the specific gravity, slightly vary depending on the iron concentration; a dominant cause of peridot color variation.
